New Fashion Trends for 2013

2013 Design Trends from Fashion Week

Fashion Week, where the styles and colors for Spring and Summer 2013 are declared, is sweeping the fashion capitals of the world. Last week saw the streets of New York City flocked by the haute happenings, London is in the midst of the revelry, and next the runways of Milan will open, followed by Paris, with the Design Week shows following a similar pattern of globetrotting. Let’s take a look at the designer movements of the moment!

Home Fashion Trends 2013 Stripes and BlueFirst and foremost, color lays the palette for each season. Pantone is our go-to resource for au courant colors, their color predictions are spot-on. According to the trend-setters at Pantone, the color to watch out for is Monaco Blue, a nautical and classic blue. We can also look forward to a bold poppy red, and Nordstrom has already declared red lips as the must-have accessory of the season. Bringing a softer side to these classics, we will see happy buttercup yellows, delicate linen hued neutrals, and gauzy jade, dusk, and violet hues. Neons are still in, but are making their way into our homes and wardrobes as details and accessories rather than dominating entire pieces. Black and white, especially together, were also EVERYWHERE on the runways this season! Marc Jacobs entire line revealed a mod ’60s world, almost exclusively in black and white.

2013 Fashion Trends for the Home from Maison & Objet

Leather looks, perhaps inspired by the 50 Shades of Grey preoccupation, but more likely inspired by the work of photographer Helmut Newton, were prevalent. This tough look was softened with playful sweetheart details, think leather mixed with a garden floral print, or dolled up with lace. Linen also took center stage this season, bringing a relaxed yet luxurious vintage look, one that is also classic French. Stripes manifested themselves into all types of looks, dominating the designs of Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, and Oscar de La Rente. The bold and graphic print trend of last season had staying power, and is, in fact, blossoming. Latin American prints, birds, and busy novelty motifs lent a vibrancy and fun to new designs. We are also seeing a lot of sheers, peek-a-boo cut-aways, and even granny gone wild macrame knots.

Vintage American and French Moderne themes have been prevailing in home decor trends. As the digital age becomes a global norm, iconic items like old fashioned telephones and televisions, typewriters and antique typography, have become more of an artform, representative of a nostalgic past, rather than the function that they once served. Even Micky Mouse himself is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, as the amabassador of such simpler times. French Moderne brings a contemporary finish to the curvaceous lines of Renaissance relics, a modern glamour with a reflective quality.

All of these elements might be summed up as Magpie-Chic. A worldly collector with an eye for style, browsing markets, antique stores, and boutiques from around the world. A bohemian arrangement, where a vintage items repose on contemporary furniture, and clean neutral colorscapes are shaken up by spicy accessories. Raid your granny’s closet and pair one of her colorful skirts with a sophisticated white blouse. No need to match perfectly, or pick a defining theme. Bring together what you love and make it work.

Zoe Fall Color Trends with WallPops Peel and Stick Decals

Nights are starting to hold a hint of a chill, leaves are beginning to quiver, and the air is alive with the promise of change on the horizon. Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year, when the vibrant colors of nature make a spectacular farewell to another harvest season. Right around the beginning of September, we find ourselves craving pumpkin flavored treats, and pulling our sweaters and jeans back out of hiding. Autumn represents so much transition and excitement, especially for those of us who have new back to school routines to establish. We rediscover comfort foods like soups and stews, roasted vegetables, and local apples, and we revel in a whole new palette of Fall fashions!

There are lots of little ways that we can revamp our homes to bring the colors and traditions of Autumn inside! Festive candles, especially scented ones, bring a pleasant, toasty flicker indoors with rich reds, orange, brown, and yellow to reflect Autumn’s glory. Pillows and throw blankets can be added to existing décor, encouraging a cuddly ambiance, and providing an opportunity to toss in some seasonal shades. Welcome everybody to your home with mums, pumpkins, and gourds by the front door, and even try placing a mini pumpkin in the bathroom for an unexpected Autumn delight! Dorm rooms are classically stark, and come to you with heaps of rules, like no candles, no painting, no tacks or nails in the walls… they certainly don’t make it easy for you to make your room look enthralling!

However, don’t get discouraged by the bleak, white walls and utilitarian furniture. Your dorm room can be a truly fabulous space, one that expresses your personal style, welcomes you after a long day, and encourages your creative energy! Brace Yourself For A Busy Fall!

Five Back to School Tips for a Happy, Organized Academic Year

Reestablish a good bedtime routine.

Ease your children back into a busy schedule by gradually reintroducing a school year bedtime.  It is helpful to start this process a couple of weeks before school begins so that your children are not thrown off balance with a drastic sleeping adjustment on the first day.  The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children ages 1 to 3 get 12 to 14 hours of sleep, children 3 to 5 years of age, 11 to 13 hours, and children five to 10 years old, 10 to 11.  This information is useful to keep in mind when reestablishing a bedtime routine.  After all, a sufficient night’s sleep will greatly improve your children’s daily activities. One of our adorable peel & stick clock decals can make keeping track of bedtime less of a chore!

Create a Calendar Central

Life becomes much busier at the end of August or the start of September but that doesn’t mean it necessarily has to become more chaotic.  With extracurricular activities, deadlines, meetings, social gatherings and more, keep the family up-to-date on the swirl of upcoming events by creating a calendar center, a centralized site for all family calendars and schedules.  To ensure everyone is well-informed without overcrowding a calendar, assign each family member his or her own monthly dry erase board.  Ideal for this use, is the new WallPops by Jonathan Adler Bargello Wave Four-Piece Dry Erase Calendar set.  The calendars feature Adler’s signature groovy waves in blue, orange, green and pink with one wave color per calendar so each family member can have his or her own.  For other peppy prints, try the Links Monthly Calendar featuring white-and-green circular tie-knots over a teal background with a navy border along with the Honeycomb, a classic navy-and-white honeycomb pattern with a teal outline.

WallPops Dry-Erase Calendar by Jonathan Adler with a Links pattern   Designer Dry-Erase by Jonathan Adler for WallPops

Make the center complete with dry erase boards to leave extra notes and reminders to all.  Try the coordinating Wave Dry Erase Board in a rainbow of colors with an orange outline.  To add a touch of personalization, surprise the family with the cheerful collection of Zodiac Dry Erase Boards featuring a top, solid color to provide ample room for notes, divided by the astrological sign written in fun fonts and a festive pattern or design on the bottom of the board.

Get ahead.

Never underestimate how much planning ahead can improve each day.  Before the week begins, plan meals for each day even stocking the freezer with prepared entrées for stress-free nights; layout children’s outfits a week ahead of time to save precious morning minutes as well as any other preparations to get you ahead of the game and ease the week ahead.

Start a New Tradition

As children can often get nervous for the big first day, initiate a new, fun tradition to mark the beginning of the school year and to begin autumn’s faster pace on the right foot.  Simply spending time together can ease the transition and comfort nerves.  Whether it’s a special family barbeque, end of summer vacation or big pancake breakfast the morning of, the tradition can be celebrated and looked forward to in the years to come.

By following these tips and getting the new school year off to a good start, your family can have a seamless and joyful year.

“A vase of flowers or greens will bring even a dull hotel room to life in the most delightful way. The small amount of trouble or expense involved is honestly repaid in real decorative effect. If you find cut flowers too extravagant, stick to the greens. Laurel, rhododendron leaves, huckleberry or pine will all last many days, even weeks.” – Dorothy Draper

“Replace white walls with unexpected neutrals like camel, olive or baby blue.” – Jonathan Adler

“Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.”  – Billy Baldwin

“Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose.” – Charles Eames

“Forget the floor plans. Arrange the furniture where it is the most comfortable and will look best.” – Albert Hadley

“For a house to be successful, the objects in it must communicate with one another, respond and balance one another.” – Andre Putman

“Good dressing is largely a question of detail and accessories.” – Elsie de Wolfe

“I believe a rich, dark color actually makes the walls recede, giving the illusion of a larger space.” – Carrie Fundingsland

“When in doubt, add mirrors for extra glamour, put a piece of mirror on top of a cabinet to make it sparkle or in a niche to create the illusion of depth.” – Jonathan Adler

“Mix it up. It’s much more interesting and fun.” – Ariana Villalta

“Stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date.” – Billy Baldwin

“When in doubt, eliminate. If you’re wondering whether something looks right, take it out. If you make a mistake, correct it instantly, don’t try to live with it.” – Thomas Britt

“When you want to transform a room into an entirely different animal, change the color.” – Billy Baldwin

“You can never judge a paint hue by the liquid color in the paint pot. You must apply it to a wall, wait for the paint to dry, then decide.” – Dorothy Draper

“Color is alluring. It automatically makes you feel like pouring drinks and being festive.” – Sarah Bengur

“A well-proportioned coffee table is your pebble in the pond – everything else ripples out from there.” – Jeff Lincoln

“Accessories are where I like to make a statement: They’re the soul of a room.” – Austin Varner
