We get many questions about our peel and stick NuWallpaper and decided to compile some of our most commonly asked questions into a handy FAQ! If you’re thinking of decorating with NuWallpaper, here are some things to know.

Will NuWallpaper stick to a textured wall?
This is definitely the most frequent question we get about NuWallpaper! First and foremost, NuWallpaper works best on smooth, flat surfaces, such as a painted wall (although if the surface is freshly painted, we recommend waiting 30-60 days before applying any decal to allow the paint to fully cure).

Most textured surfaces are too porous or uneven to provide enough surface area for NuWallpaper to adhere too. We have had some customers successfully install NuWallpaper on lightly textured walls, but as each surface is individual, we have to recommend installing it at your own risk.

Still unsure if NuWallpaper will work for you? We highly recommend testing out a sample on the textured surface you are looking to cover first to ensure that it will stay up and that you are content with any amount of texture that may show through the NuWallpaper. To order a sample, open the page of your desired NuWallpaper pattern, select “Sample – 8 in X 10 in” in the Item drop down list in the Ordering Options box, then click Add To Cart and checkout!

Can you put NuWallpaper over wood paneling?

As most wood paneling is smooth, yes! Depending on the space between each panel, you may see the gaps through the NuWallpaper.

Here a customer used Beachwood NuWallpaper over a wood panel wall:

Is NuWallpaper safe to use in a rental home/apartment or dorm?
Yes! We developed and designed NuWallpaper with modern home decorators in mind. NuWallpaper is perfect to decorate with and make it your own. And because it comes down in seconds and easily peels off without leaving any residue behind, it’s a cinch to revert the space back to its original design.

Below, our Trellis NuWallpaper is used to customize two customers’ spaces to their individual home decor styles and tastes:

Right: Pink Grand Trellis via Wildernessa

How much does one roll of NuWallpaper cover / how many rolls will I need?
Each roll of NuWallpaper covers a total area of about 28 square feet. To figure out how many rolls you will need, measure the length and width of the space you want to decorate, multiply the dimensions, then divide by 28 and round up if not a whole number.

For example, the above wall is 13.6 feet wide and 8 feet tall (108.8 square feet), and 4 rolls of the Birch Tree pattern were needed.

Can I use NuWallpaper in a bathroom?
Absolutely! As long as it is not being directly hit by water, it will hold up in your bathroom. Occasional splashes and humidity are both fine. If the bathroom does not have a ventilation system, we caution that excessive humidity buildup could affect NuWallpaper, as it would for normal wallpaper or paint.

Do you have any wall pops that magnets can be used on? So a traditional wall pop like dry erase or chalk that are also magnetic?

Hello! At this time we do not have any magnetic decals, but we will certainly pass the idea along to our design team! However, you may be able to still stick a magnet to a dry-erase decal if it is stuck on something that is magnetic, such as the surface of some fridges.

For some reason some of your decals work on our textured wall and others are lifting (two different decals/products), I was wondering if there are any steps I can take to get the ones that are lifting to stick better?

      Hi Mary Katherine,

We’re so sorry for the difficulties you’re having! WallPops always apply best to smooth, flat surfaces. However, our customers have had success applying them to textured walls, but the results depend upon how textured the walls are.
It may depend upon what kind of decals you’re using. We have a few different materials that we use, each having different weights and textures. It could also just be the spot that the decal is on. If it is more textured than the other area, it could be part of the issue. Our decals are sometimes affected by humidity, so that could be part of the problem.
The only thing we can recommend is to keep reapplying the decal and firmly smoothing it to the wall.
If you continue to have issues, please call our customer service line at 1-800-366-1700 for further assistance!

Please let us know if you have any other questions!

      Hi Kristin,
Yes, we only recommend using this once. It can definitely be repositioned while you are hanging it, but it would be very difficult to use more than once.

      Hi Dee,

Thank you for your question! We do not recommend using NuWallpaper on floors. It’s a bit too slick and may not hold up to constant wear.

      Hi Carl,
Great question! We generally do not recommend hanging NuWallpaper on top of traditional wallpaper, as it may not stick as well.
If you want to try it, we would recommend hanging a full test strip to see how well it applies to your wall and hangs over a month or so.
Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Can you please answer to this? She wants me to take it down if I can’t get this question answered. If you can answer me this she says it can stay. Please help! Thanks

    Hello,
We recently bought 5 rolls of the “shiplap” from our local Home Depot. We got 3 rolls up and I’m so excited with how it turned out so far! Unfortunately, as we placed the 4th roll up… it’s a different shade? It’s so close in color, you couldn’t tell when it’s all rolled up. The only thing we can find different about the rolls is the LOT number on the bottom of the clear container. Is this something you track or will it just be a hit or miss of which shades I buy? The local Home Depot I went back to, did not have anymore with LOT numbers on them… ?
Ah! I’m just a little nervous we have to redo the whole wall

Hi Mindy! We’re so happy to hear the start of your DIY is going well – per our instructions, we recommend ensuring that all rolls are from the same lot number as different runs may have a slight variation. We would encourage you to reach out to Home Depot to see if there are any rolls in stock that match the current lot number you have installed, or you can call our customer service team and see if we still have inventory of that batch. Hope this information helps!

Can you give me information about applying NuWallpaper over bare wood? In this case, it’s plywood and we have to wait for the work to be finished due to the pandemic. We can’t paint it because of what will go over the plywood when we’re done. Thanks 🙂

Hi Cindy! Typically we recommend installing NuWallpaper on completely smooth and flat surfaces. We do not recommend installing over unpainted drywall/sheetrock/plaster. As long as the surface is smooth and flat, you should be good to go!

We have an older house that has been decorated with wallpaper several times before. These walls have never been painted so the existing plaster may well be impregnated with glue from previous hangings. Will this nuwall paper be ok to use on this kind of wall.

Hi Karla, thank you for your question! It would entirely depend on how deep the grooves are with the panels. Typically, we only recommend installing over completely smooth and flat surfaces, but if you’d like, send our customer service team a close-up photo of the paneling, and we’ll be better able to advise!

I just skim-coated a textured wall with joint compound to get it smooth. Should I put primer on it before applying wallpaper, and if so what kind and how many coats? Thanks!

    • Reply

      Andrea Greeson

      March 22, 2022

Hi Nancy, our peel and stick wallpapers should not be directly applied to that joint compound. While we typically recommend installing over finished, painted walls, you may be able to install over walls which have been sealed/primed with a water-based primer (since paint can take up to 60 days to fully cure). If you choose to go this route, we’d recommend testing a strip of NuWallpaper on the primed wall to make sure it sticks before moving forward with hanging the full wall.

Hi Nancy, after a fresh coat of paint has been applied, you should wait 30-60 days before applying NuWallpaper™. This allows the paint to fully cure, ensuring that NuWallpaper™ will not damage the paint when it is removed.
