Nurseries and kids’ rooms are wising up.

A onetime star of ’70s crafting kits and macramé wall hangings has returned as the “it” critter for the baby-to-preschool set. Perched on crib bedding, bibs, lunch bags and backpacks, the owl is a decorative force with staying power, manufacturers and retailers say.

Parents of young children are welcoming the break from pinks, princesses and plastic. “The kids’ rooms now are more of an extension of the rest of the house,” says Paula Berberian, creative director for WallPops, a line of removable peel-and-stick wall art popular for kids’ rooms. When entering that space, “you’re not assaulted by a totally different look and feel,” she says.

This year, two owls feature prominently in WallPops’ $31 Hoot and Hangout bedroom wall-art kit, which also includes a 51-inch-tall tree. “That immediately rose to one of our best-sellers,” says Ms. Berberian. The $15 Owl Silhouettes collection comprises four 13-by-13-inch owls, two “sleepy” and two “wide awake.”

“Anything we do with owls is really popular,” Ms. Berberian says. WallPops is a brand of Brewster Home Fashions, of Randolph, Mass…. click here to read the whole feature on the Wall Street Journal On-line site.
