Never let size be an obstacle to style! If you have a small space to decorate, here are some special tips and tricks to make the room work for you.

Go On a Color Spree – it is a common misconception that you should stick to all white in a small space. “Embrace small spaces and make them feel like jewel boxes—don’t be afraid of dark or bright colors,” says designer Jonathan Adler. Other designers assert that bright colors can distract from the limited size of your space, creating a beautiful ambiance. While white and other pale hues an be a beautiful choice for petite quarters, color can also be used to create a focal point, divert attention from the fact that a room is small, and to give any space some razzle dazzle, no matter what its size!

Create Vertical Allure With Curtains-  look up! Even if you don’t have particularly high ceilings, you can enhance the perceived size of your space by optimizing the upper wall space. One tried and true trick is to hang your curtain rods above the window frame, even as high as the ceiling! While your instinct may be to hang curtains at the top of the window, you can truly accomplish drama and height by hanging your curtains higher and having them drop all of the way to the floor.

Another practical and attractive technique is to install shelves up high. In addition to creating new, out of the way space to display items, this will draw the eye up to new areas of the room, taking advantage of every inch! Add attractive baskets or boxes to the shelves for extra storage of items not “display worthy”.

Compelling Stripes- it is a fashion fact that up and down stripes can make you look longer and leaner, while horizontal lines make you look wider. The same principle can be applied to home decor. To make a room look taller, accentuate the height with tall, thin stripes. And to make a wall look more expansive, add long lines. Stripes are timeless and chic, and make a great focal point for walls. Try using removable stripes decals for perfect stripes every time!
