Brace Yourself For A Busy Fall!

Five Back to School Tips for a Happy, Organized Academic Year

Reestablish a good bedtime routine.

Ease your children back into a busy schedule by gradually reintroducing a school year bedtime.  It is helpful to start this process a couple of weeks before school begins so that your children are not thrown off balance with a drastic sleeping adjustment on the first day.  The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children ages 1 to 3 get 12 to 14 hours of sleep, children 3 to 5 years of age, 11 to 13 hours, and children five to 10 years old, 10 to 11.  This information is useful to keep in mind when reestablishing a bedtime routine.  After all, a sufficient night’s sleep will greatly improve your children’s daily activities. One of our adorable peel & stick clock decals can make keeping track of bedtime less of a chore!

Create a Calendar Central

Life becomes much busier at the end of August or the start of September but that doesn’t mean it necessarily has to become more chaotic.  With extracurricular activities, deadlines, meetings, social gatherings and more, keep the family up-to-date on the swirl of upcoming events by creating a calendar center, a centralized site for all family calendars and schedules.  To ensure everyone is well-informed without overcrowding a calendar, assign each family member his or her own monthly dry erase board.  Ideal for this use, is the new WallPops by Jonathan Adler Bargello Wave Four-Piece Dry Erase Calendar set.  The calendars feature Adler’s signature groovy waves in blue, orange, green and pink with one wave color per calendar so each family member can have his or her own.  For other peppy prints, try the Links Monthly Calendar featuring white-and-green circular tie-knots over a teal background with a navy border along with the Honeycomb, a classic navy-and-white honeycomb pattern with a teal outline.

Make the center complete with dry erase boards to leave extra notes and reminders to all.  Try the coordinating Wave Dry Erase Board in a rainbow of colors with an orange outline.  To add a touch of personalization, surprise the family with the cheerful collection of Zodiac Dry Erase Boards featuring a top, solid color to provide ample room for notes, divided by the astrological sign written in fun fonts and a festive pattern or design on the bottom of the board.

Get ahead.

Never underestimate how much planning ahead can improve each day.  Before the week begins, plan meals for each day even stocking the freezer with prepared entrées for stress-free nights; layout children’s outfits a week ahead of time to save precious morning minutes as well as any other preparations to get you ahead of the game and ease the week ahead.

Start a New Tradition

As children can often get nervous for the big first day, initiate a new, fun tradition to mark the beginning of the school year and to begin autumn’s faster pace on the right foot.  Simply spending time together can ease the transition and comfort nerves.  Whether it’s a special family barbeque, end of summer vacation or big pancake breakfast the morning of, the tradition can be celebrated and looked forward to in the years to come.

By following these tips and getting the new school year off to a good start, your family can have a seamless and joyful year.

“A vase of flowers or greens will bring even a dull hotel room to life in the most delightful way. The small amount of trouble or expense involved is honestly repaid in real decorative effect. If you find cut flowers too extravagant, stick to the greens. Laurel, rhododendron leaves, huckleberry or pine will all last many days, even weeks.” – Dorothy Draper

“Replace white walls with unexpected neutrals like camel, olive or baby blue.” – Jonathan Adler

“Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.”  – Billy Baldwin

“Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose.” – Charles Eames

“Forget the floor plans. Arrange the furniture where it is the most comfortable and will look best.” – Albert Hadley

“For a house to be successful, the objects in it must communicate with one another, respond and balance one another.” – Andre Putman

“Good dressing is largely a question of detail and accessories.” – Elsie de Wolfe

“I believe a rich, dark color actually makes the walls recede, giving the illusion of a larger space.” – Carrie Fundingsland

“When in doubt, add mirrors for extra glamour, put a piece of mirror on top of a cabinet to make it sparkle or in a niche to create the illusion of depth.” – Jonathan Adler

“Mix it up. It’s much more interesting and fun.” – Ariana Villalta

“Stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date.” – Billy Baldwin

“When in doubt, eliminate. If you’re wondering whether something looks right, take it out. If you make a mistake, correct it instantly, don’t try to live with it.” – Thomas Britt

“When you want to transform a room into an entirely different animal, change the color.” – Billy Baldwin

“You can never judge a paint hue by the liquid color in the paint pot. You must apply it to a wall, wait for the paint to dry, then decide.” – Dorothy Draper

“Color is alluring. It automatically makes you feel like pouring drinks and being festive.” – Sarah Bengur

“A well-proportioned coffee table is your pebble in the pond – everything else ripples out from there.” – Jeff Lincoln

“Accessories are where I like to make a statement: They’re the soul of a room.” – Austin Varner

Saying Thank You to a Special Teacher

A brilliant thank you gift for a teacher by WallPops

The end of a school year is always exciting, and also comes with a touch of bittersweet reverie. Marking the ever turning carousel of time, the last day of school is a very symbolic event. Teachers are a vital part of our children’s journey. In between learning about cursive and tadpoles, multiplication and music, teachers also deliver life wisdom, and negotiate social dynamics. Acknowledging the dedication and time that a teacher has spent over the year is a wonderful gesture, one that shows appreciation, and gives your child a chance to express a gracious goodbye. WallPops are a beautiful thank you gift for a teacher. A lot of teachers use WallPops in their classrooms to add a fun, personal touch without damaging school walls. The dry-erase boards and calendar decals are also handy for making daily notes, practicing math, spelling, and handwriting, and keeping track of things like science experiment results. The peel and stick alphabet decals are an awesome addition to any classroom! They can be arranged as a beautiful, educational alphabet. Or, since the set comes with multiples of each letter, these decals can be arranged to label areas with messages like “wash your hands!” and “library books”. Here are a few of our favorite ideas for perfect teacher’s gifts!

Black and White Decor

The Colors of Classic!

Nixon Blox by Jonathan Adler for WallPops

Black and white, the ultimate combination for enduring sophistication. As compelling in a modern decor theme as in a vintage style or a country-chic motif, black and white defines classic. There is something intriguingly je ne sais quoi about both black, and white, the only colors who almost defy color at all. White, the color of light that can be broken into all the colors of the spectrum, and black sometimes referred to as the absence of color, are enigmas, and they contrast with each other like no one else.

Using black and white as a decor theme is a fresh and clean approach, truly capable of making a space appear larger. To take advantage of this distinguished duo together, add pops of color for style and warmth. For a modern look, bling-y metallic accents provide a sleek and chic detail. For an inviting, rustic appeal, country blues and yellows are a welcome splash of sass. Even gentle dallops of cream, taupe and brown will bring a personal touch to a black and white room. Below are images from Ink, a Black and White Collection from Brewster Home Fashions, showing a diverse range of rooms from contemporary to traditional.

Trending Now: Pretty Paisleys

Cultured and Fun Paisley is Dominating Style Trends This Year

Paisley Trend by Jonathan Adler for WallPops Verve Paisley Wallpaper by Brewster Home Fashions

Want to be noticed? Paisley is definitely an eye catcher and it seems everybody from Elle Decor to Stella McCartney and even designer nail artists are crushing on this heritage print this season! A historical pattern with roots stretching to India and Persia as far back as the Sassanid Empire, paisley as we know it is actually named for a Scottish Town and it is seriously trending now. Still crazy after all these years, paisley print has a way of taking center stage with a wild design characterized by a mango or teardrop shape, embellished with ornate details. Today’s designers have found ways of modernizing the design with chic hues and intriguing scale. Paisley can bring an element of fun to an otherwise traditional item, and has a very cultured, bohemian flair.

Love Your Planet!

3 Tips For Green Decor This Year!

WallPops by Jonathan Adler Dry-Erase Wall Decals Save Paper

You know what they say, “Earth Day is Every Day”. And, every year around Earth Day, which is April 22, we take a special moment to thank the Earth and to acknowledge ways that we can make a difference.

1. Reduce! Buying Locally made goods has so many wonderful benefits. For starters, by consciously buying goods that are made locally you are supporting the economy of your country, which helps to guarantee jobs! WallPops are made in America. In fact, we were very honored to be featured in a Diane Sawyer feature on ABC about decorating using products Made in America. You can see the video here. We are proud to be a high quality, innovative product line from the USA and we appreciate your support! When you buy locally made products, you also reduce the amount of packaging and fuel it takes to get the product into your hand. When things are made far away and imported from other countries, they have to be packaged more than once and trek across the ocean in ships or on planes to get to you, taking a toll on our precious environment. For an amazing resource on other goods that are made in the USA, you can check out the ABC News Made in America Page. From rugs to wall decor and appliances to furniture, you can find everything you need for a beautiful home Made in America!

2. Re-Use! Batteries, paper cups, grocery bags… many things that we used to use and dispose of after only one use now have very hip re-usable versions. It is both eco-chic and stylish to acquire a high quality item once that can be used and re-used like a cloth shopping bag or a metal water bottle. As we become more educated on how things like plastic bags and paper cups are harming the environment for a fleeting moment of function, it becomes an obvious call to action to do our part. Luckily, feeling good about making responsible decisions is also an opportunity to equip ourselves with fabulous re-usable goods. One great way to save paper, for years to come, is to convert to dry-erase message boards and calendars. Because they are re-usable, you can save trees! Use the same calendar for more than one year. Buy less post-it notes. Have an ultra lovely place to stay organized. Feeling good never looked so good!

Reduce Reuse Recycle with a Dry-Erase Calendar by WallPops

3. Recycle! Recycling is a state of mind, not just the glass, metal, paper and plastic that we separate from our trash each week. There are a lot of sites and projects devoted to revamping our recyclables and “trash” into things as beautiful as wedding centerpieces from Mason jars and tin cans! For a fun post devoted to ways to use an Altoids tin for everything from a first aid kit to a guitar, click here! We were inspired, too! Since WallPops can be cut to any shape or size, we simply covered an Altoids box lid with a rectangle of Black Jack and then got creative cutting zebra stripes out of Plush Purple WallPops! Now this box can have a second life carrying bobby pins, or organizing a desk drawer, or collecting buttons, or loose change…

Turn an Altoids Box into something with this DIY idea!
